What is an online store, and how is it different from selling on social media?

An online store and selling on Instagram aren't the same thing. The difference, explained simply.

An online store is your own website where a product catalog, prices, payment, and order management are all set up together, professionally — unlike selling on social media, where orders are handled manually in comments and DMs.

For example, on Instagram commenting "price?" under a product and waiting for a reply is one thing; on your own online store, the buyer picks the size themselves, sees the price instantly, and pays by card in one tap — you don't even need to be online for the order to happen.

An online store also shows up in Google search — someone searching for your product who doesn't know your account can still find you. That's impossible on social media, since posts aren't indexed by search engines.

What a professional catalog gives you

In an online store, every order, buyer, and payment lives in one place — not scattered across hundreds of comments and messages. That means you can see who buys again, which product sells best, and where buyers drop off before paying — information you simply can't track by hand on social media.

The store is also built for mobile so a buyer can browse the catalog, choose, and pay with one hand — far faster than scrolling back through individual posts on an Instagram profile. As your product count grows, catalog search and filters (by price, size, category) make a real difference — social media simply has no such filter; the buyer has to scroll through every post by hand.

Buyers remember their past orders too — they see their own history when they log in and can reorder easily, which is impossible on social media without scrolling back through old messages.

The difference isn't either/or — many Georgian businesses use Instagram to attract an audience, and a website to finish the sale professionally.
